The cool bite of an October breeze, the changing, dying and falling of the leaves, foggy mornings, pumpkins, pea coats…
I love and admire the signs of Autumn.
There is one sign however, that I don’t greet with enthusiasm.
As the sun dips down earlier and earlier each day, you won’t find me cheering. It’s probably the only thing I don’t like about Fall.
There’s a sense of urgency when the sun is still out, to go on a walk or enjoy the changing colors, because I know that soon the world will be overcome with darkness, and there is nothing I can do to stop it.
It is days like these that make me feel like I’m chasing the light.
And it makes me wonder…
what would life look like if we always lived like the light was fading?
Jesus said in John 9:4, “While it is daytime, we must do the works of Him who sent Me. Night is coming, when no one can work.”
There is a parallel between the coming of Winter and the second coming of the Son of Man.
For one, it is sure. Just as the signs of Autumn- the cooler days and longer nights-are evidence to the coming Winter, there are signs that our Lord is coming too.
Suffering. Hurricanes. Pestilence. War. We’ve seen it in times past and we may see more of it in times to come, all as the bible references them, the birth-pangs of our Lords return.
As he said in Revelation 3:22,
“I am coming soon. Hold fast to what you have, so that no one may seize your crown.”
I don’t know how long he’ll be. Somedays I hope he’ll tarry. Other days I ache to see him with my eyes before they close in sleep.
But I know that he’s coming, and I know that the light is fading on the time we have left to give and receive his glorious gospel.
” For he says, “In a favorable time I listened to you, and in a day of salvation I have helped you.” Behold, now is the favorable time; behold, now is the day of salvation.” -2 Corinthians 6:2
No one likes to think about the end of Summer, yet regardless of our feelings, we must accept it and prepare for Winter.
The end of our world or the end of our days isn’t a pleasant thought unless you know where you’re going and you’re ready to be there.
Do you know? Are you ready?
You can see that the light is fading so “seek the Lord while he may be found; call upon him while he is near.” -Isaiah 55:6
As the days grow shorter and our world goes dark, keep chasing the light, with all you have left.
Beautiful words and analogy Emily. I loved it! Grandma
