listening, watching, perceiving
that I don’t want to be one of them-
one who is constantly
listening watching, perceiving
everyone’s lives but their very own
Pushing away children, our books, the trees
No time for God or discipline or rest
we’re always listening, watching, perceiving
worrying, comparing, condemning
Looking at screens instead of the stars
scrolling instead of savoring
this one wild life we have
one life and it’s wasting away
Be not conformed to the patterns of this world
Be not captivated, captured, consumed
Lord I don’t want to be listening
unless I’m listening for your voice
I don’t want to be watching
unless I’m watching for your return
I don’t want to be perceiving
unless I’m perceiving your will for me
Not found in the things of this world
Not heard in the buzz of its cry
stop listening, watching, perceiving
Draw near and your God will draw nigh.
